Form to Function II

The Delaware Contemporary | February 2 - March 24, 2018

PRESS RELEASE

For the second time, The Delaware Contemporary is collaborating with Philadelphia’s Wexler Gallery to spotlight two visionary artists Gregory Nagle and Peter Pincus.

This exhibition showcases the innovative, gilded and bronzed functional and non-functional work of Gregory Nagle, and the free-spirited, brightly patterned porcelain vessels of Peter Pincus. Both artists find continual fascination with the challenges presented in their respective media.

. . .

Peter Pincus’ pioneering work defines pottery in contemporary practice; there is a respect for history, but also a reverence for fresh approaches to crafting a ceramic vessel. Exploring the intersection of color and form, Pincus’ complex and sophisticated method reconsiders the functionality yet the aesthetics of ceramics. Years of experimentation led to the development of his technique for the famed vessels. Like a master painter with a canvas, Pincus brushes pigmented slip onto the clay vessels. But the similarities stop there. Each labor-intensive step involves hours of preparation, tools, templates, molds, pigments, sanding, glazing, firing, and finishing, all with a surgically precise technique to create his “three-dimensional ceramic paintings.”
