Sleep, In Spite of the Storm

Main Street Arts | July 12 - August 29, 2014

PRESS RELEASE

The first solo exhibition in our main gallery space, this exhibition featured new functional and sculptural ceramic work by Peter Pincus of Penfield, NY.

Peter Pincus is a Rochester area native and began his study of ceramics through classes at the Genesee Pottery while in high school. He went on to receive a BFA in ceramics and metal work and an MFA in ceramics, both from Alfred University. Just this year he has participated in Art of The Pot in Austin, TX and the 2014 NCECA Conference in Milwaukee, WI. He is a 2013 recipient of a NICHE Award and in 2012, he was featured on the cover of Ceramics Monthly Magazine.

His exhibition, titled Sleep, In Spite of The Storm, celebrated the notion of the intimate relationship. On view were porcelain pots and vessels, which were in this case presented as a collection of sculptural groupings. He says, “It’s a unique challenge to consider pottery as a premier form of abstract expression, carrying with it much more than the ability to contain and serve. This show is strongly autobiographic in nature. My goal is for this body of work to be a series of concrete reflections of my experience as a husband, father, early career artist, and educator. It is uncommon ground and has made my recent months in the studio thrilling and captivating.”
